During their last months in office, Trump regime bureaucrats issued and promulgated more than a thousand new rules and regulations designed to codify their extreme racist, corrupt, destructive, bigoted, and anti-democratic ideology. The processes for creating, amending, and overturning federal rules and regulations are complex, arcane, and lengthy. While some rules may be overturned by executive order or review by federal agencies and departments, others may only be overturned by passing new legislation or invoking the Congressional Review Act (CRA), which gives Congress sixty days to overturn such rules and regulations. But as a practical matter, even if they move swiftly, they will only have time to revoke a dozen or so.
So we're working to identify the worst of the worst and asking you to urge your MoC to begin immediate CRA action to revoke them. Our federal working group has chosen these three priorities:
- DHS: Procedures for Asylum and Withholding of Removal (Docket# 2020-26875). This cruel and racist rule permanently codifies precedents set by Trump's Department of Homeland Security to greatly restrict asylum eligibility and to deny entry to men, women and children fleeing persecution.
- DoJ: Rule to Eliminate Claims for Title VI Disparate Impact (RIN 1190-NYD). This Department of Justice rule promulgated under Attorney General Barr undercuts the basis for discrimination lawsuits brought under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
- EPA: Strengthening Transparency in Pivotal Science Underlying Significant Regulatory Actions and Influential Scientific Information (Docket# 2020-29179). This deceptive Environmental Protection Agency rule is intended to cripple the EPA's ability to issue health and safety rules and regulations based on proven damage to peoples' health.
Call your Members of Congress and tell them: Use the Congressional Review Act to repeal Trump regime rules and regulations.
Addressing the Newsom recall
We in California face the difficult prospect of a recall election against Governor Newsom. This Republican-driven effort to capitalize on voters’ frustration with the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and keep stoking right-wing anger threatens to throw a wrench into state politics this year.
Recall efforts, like impeachment, should be reserved for extreme cases of dereliction of duty. Regardless of whether we support Newsom ourselves, we should oppose this recall measure as yet another far-right attempt to undermine the democratic process. There are no actions to take on this issue yet, but it’s never too late to get informed.
One of our members researched the effort and wrote on what we know so far. You can read about it on our blog here.
Today! Town hall with your new Senator, Alex Padilla
In the past few weeks, our friends at Indivisible East Bay welcomed Senator Alex Padilla with a video, calls, and a meeting on Monday, February 8th, which we at Indivisible SF joined in on! We’re overjoyed that Senator Padilla has heard the calls of California Indivisibles and will be holding a Town Hall!
U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) will be speaking to Indivisible members across California today, February 17, at 5 PM to discuss his priorities in the 117th Congress. A coalition of CA Indivisible Groups is co-hosting the event, and it will be moderated by East Valley Indivisible's Vanessa Narad Axelsen. This virtual town hall event is closed to the press, and you must sign up to attend.
Sign up NOW on Mobilize here. Indivisible Northridge has graciously provided the sign-up page. The login to the town hall webinar will be sent when you sign up.
Senator Padilla will answer audience questions to address our concerns and priorities. We submitted questions before the deadline on Friday, and we can’t wait to hear the senator’s answers.
