NDN News: Vaccinate Seniors, Ari Berman Tuesday, A Disgraced Party

We had some technical issues yesterday and some of you may have received a working draft of NDN News and not the final text. We send along a fresh one this morning. Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.

Launch a National Campaign to Vaccinate Seniors – In a new medium essay, Simon makes the case that the Biden Administration should launch a national effort to get all seniors vaccinated by April 15th. It is not just good health policy, but can give the country an early “win” which will help build momentum for all the work ahead.  The essay also discusses how we should begin seeing the defeating of COVID as a big national project, one which bring a divided nation together, and restore a degree of common purpose and common achievement which would be very welcome right now.

Ari Berman Tuesday On The Fight Over Voting, New Video– So next up in our new weekly NDN Talks series will be noted author and commentator Ari Berman, who will be joining us at 1pm ET Tuesday to talk about the coming battles over voting.  This is a really important issue and Ari has been an inspirational thought leader in this space for many years now.  Reserve your spot for what will be a great discussion today.   And don’t forget – With Democrats Things Gets Betteris being presented every Friday at 2pm ET through the end of March.  If you haven’t caught this compelling presentation yet join us, or watch a recent showing.

Our video library now includes our recent events with Rep. Scott Peters, Rep. Ruben Gallego, Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat, our Feb 5th presentation of With Democrats and yesterday’s terrific discussion with prosecutor and NBC News analyst Glenn Kirschner.

A Disgraced President, A Disgraced Party– On Sunday Senator Lindsay Graham said: “(Trump’s) excited about 2022. And I'm going to go down to talk with him next week, play a little golf in Florida. And I said Mr. President this MAGA movement needs to continue.”

Over the past year the GOP has had repeated opportunities to take the off ramp from Trumpism and radicalization, and have repeatedly, tragically, chosen to stick with radicalism and MAGA.  So a movement which violently attacked the Congress, tried to hunt down Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi, injured more than 140 police officers “needs to continue” – and it will, apparently, continue with a muscular embrace from the national party leadership.

Not only has MAGA/GOP refused to make it clear that they condemn political violence and accept the results of the 2020 election, but new polling shows the public really rising up against what Trump’s party is doing now. The CIVIQS trackof Party favs/unfavs has seen the GOP plummet from 35/55 right after the election to 23/65 (-42!) today – a dramatic 20 point drop.  Biden on the other hand sits at 55/38 (+17) in the 538 job approval tracker, with some polls having him at 60 in the past week.

A new ABC News/IPSOS poll has the public favoring Trump’s conviction by 58-41 (+17!) – in Ipsos’s polling neither Clinton’s nor Trump’s First Impeachment reached 50% approval.  So this is a big number, as is the final vote to convict Trump, 57 to 43.  57 Senators voted to convict the former President for insurrection – an extraordinary moment in the history of the American Presidency for all of us to consider at the end of this President’s Day holiday.

The Growing Importance of the Southwest to Democrats – In 2004 Republicans held 6 of 8 Senate seats in AZ/CO/NM/NV and won all the region’s Electoral College votes.  With important wins in AZ and CO this last election, Democrats now hold all 8 of the region’s Senate seats and have claimed all of its 31 Electoral College votes.

The modern Democratic coalition is much more Western than in the past, something you can now see now in its leadership – a VP and Speaker, HHS Secretary, DGA/DSCC/DCCC Chairs.  4 of the 6 Senate seats won by Democrats in the last 2 elections have come from AZ/CO/NV.  See our new analysis for just how important the heavily Mexican-American parts of the US have become to the national Democratic Party.  It includes a link to our recent interview with Rep. Ruben Gallego, one of the architects of the political transformation we’ve seen in Arizona.

Sincerely,

Simon, Georgia and the rest of the NDN team
