We wanted to follow up on Mark's message, John.

20,000 people have already stepped up to sign the petition he sent urging the new Congress to finally pass universal background checks legislation – but we just checked, and it looks like you haven't added your name yet.

With this new Congress, we have our BEST opportunity in eight years to pass this commonsense bipartisan legislation to keep guns out of dangerous hands by ensuring that everyone who buys a gun has to pass a background check. But with increasing threats of violence across the country and more children headed back to schools, we can't afford to wait.

We need to make sure the new Congress makes passing this critical legislation a top priority. But we're still short of the 50,000 signatures we need on our petition, so will you add your name today to demand Congress pass universal background checks legislation now?

Subject: Please sign: Demand action on universal background checks now

John,

When the Senate failed to pass background checks legislation after my sweet little Daniel was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary, it absolutely crushed me – but I refused to give up.

With this new Congress, we have our best chance in eight years to finally pass universal background checks. This legislation is crucial to saving lives and preventing school shootings. It kills me to think about the children who might have been saved if our lawmakers had already taken action – and about the parents who didn't have to end up like me, with this awful pain that never goes away.

So as threats of gun violence surge across the country and many schools start to return to in-person learning, we must immediately prioritize passing universal background checks. That's why we're gathering 50,000 signatures to demand lawmakers pass this critical bipartisan legislation. Please, can I count on you to sign our petition right now?

I can never get Daniel back. All I can do is work every single day to give him a legacy beyond his too-short life and prevent other parents from experiencing the horror of having a child taken by gun violence. I could never thank you enough for all you do to help make that possible.

Mark Barden (Daniel's father)
