Friend, For decades big polluters like Exxon, Shell, and others have fueled and denied the climate crisis, all while raking in billions in profits each year. And despite what their greenwashing advertising says, they’re still doing it: delaying action at every turn, pushing false solutions, and influencing the rules they’re supposed to be abiding by. Here’s the thing: We know how to respond to this global crisis. Real, just solutions to address climate change are within reach, and have been led by communities on the front lines of the climate crisis for decades. In order to implement these solutions, we need Big Polluters to stop interfering, and we need to make them pay for the damage they knowingly caused and are still causing. That's why we teamed up with our allies to force these corporations to pay for the climate catastrophe they have driven. Communities around the globe are taking action toward holding polluting industries liable for the damage they have caused. But to take on the most powerful industries on the planet, we’ve got to go bigger. Consider this: Five of the top five fossil fuel corporations raked in more than $80 billion in profits last year, as communities and countries most affected struggle to find funding to address damages from climate-change-fueled disasters like Cyclone Idai and Hurricane Dorian. Around the globe, there are real, just solutions to the climate crisis within reach. But communities need funding to implement them. Take action with Green America and our allies to stop Big Polluters from blocking these solutions to the climate crisis. It’s time to make them pay. Elected leaders are starting to take action to do so. In the U.S., New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing Exxon for deceiving its shareholders. The city of Baltimore is pursuing a case to hold fossil fuel corporations accountable for actions contributing to the climate crisis. The impact of these investigations and lawsuits will be profound. Just look at the legal actions taken in the late 90s that exposed Big Tobacco’s abuses, catalyzed swift, transformative tobacco control policy around the world, and forced the industry to pay billions of dollars for the epidemic it caused. Big Polluters have used every play in the book to thwart a global response to the climate crisis because they were worried about their own profits. Because of their actions, more communities will be displaced, more homes, cities and regions will be devastated by extreme weather and more people will lose their lives. Take action with Green America and our allies to be a part of the growing movement to hold Big Polluters liable for the damage they cause and urge legislators to hold the fossil fuel industry liable so we can advance climate justice. Thanks for all you do for a greener world, |
