As extreme cold temperatures continue across the state, many of our friends, family, and neighbors are experiencing power and heat outages in their homes. I'm urging all Kansans to do their part to conserve energy so we can ensure a continued supply of natural gas and electricity as we continue weathering these bitterly cold temperatures.
My team and I put together a list of ways to limit natural gas and electricity usages during these times:
- Keep your thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Bundle up with sweaters and blankets;
- Reduce the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees;
- Seal leaks around doors and windows;
- Close your blinds and curtains to keep warm air inside and cold air out;
- Keep bedroom and bathroom doors closed to preserve heat in those rooms;
- And change or clean your furnace filters.
If you are lucky enough to have power right now, it's even more crucial to cut back on energy usage to ensure we have enough available for ALL Kansans while we make it through these sub-zero temperatures.
Our response over the next 48-72 hours is crucial, but if we all work together to conserve energy, we will see a difference.
