A recent FiveThirtyEight analysis of Indian American political candidates just confirmed what many of us already knew: when you come from an Asian immigrant community, it's harder to get your campaign off the ground.

Sri Preston Kulkarni, who has run twice to represent Texas's 22nd District, remarked that “If you're trying to call down lists of people who donate to other Democrats, you're not gonna see a whole lot of Asian names there as a percentage.”

It's promising that South Asian Americans have recently become an increasingly active force in politics: only two candidates of South Asian descent ran for office at any level in 2000, but that number increased to 40 in the past two election cycles -- and includes our current vice president.

However, we can't ignore the substantial financial barriers that keep Asian communities of all ethnicities underrepresented and underserved by our government. Here at ASPIRE, we know how to break these persistent fundraising roadblocks.
