Urge them to be a Democracy Defender.

Hey Indivisibles,

Are your members of Congress Democracy Defenders? All week long, Indivisibles are reaching out to their members of Congress during the Democracy Defenders Recess to get them to support the For the People Act and D.C. statehood. Your elected officials are back in your district until February 21 to spend time talking to constituents like you. Whether you’re holding a virtual townhall, attending a digital lobby meeting, or showing up for a socially-distanced office visit, your members need to feel the pressure -- and one of the easiest ways to get their attention is by making a video.

As a D.C. resident, we recognize that your lack of representation makes this ask particularly personal, but elected officials (and folks around the country) still need to hear from you! Make a video explaining how D.C. statehood and The For the People Act will impact you.

This is our chance to unrig the system that Republicans built to work against people of color, workers, immigrants, low-income families, and more. If we’re going to remake our democracy into one that works for all people, we need our members of Congress to use the majority that we built to be Democracy Defenders. Congressional Democracy Defenders will fight to pass our bold, structural Day One Democracy Agenda:

  • The For the People Act (H.R. 1/ S. 1), to get money out of politics, expand voting rights, combat corruption, secure our elections, and more.
  • D.C. statehood (H.R. 51/ S. 51), to bring balance to the Senate and make Congress more responsive to the needs of a diversifying electorate.

Losing these key fights or conceding on crucial pieces of these bills early on will enable the Republican party and Trumpism to control politics for years to come. We cannot afford to lose this fight if we hope to strengthen and reform our democracy and achieve all of our progressive priorities.

If you’re ready to hold your members accountable this recess and make sure they prioritize democracy reform when they head back to Washington, check out these todos:

Stay tuned for more ways throughout the week to make the most of this recess.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team

Indivisible Project is a locally-led, people-powered movement of thousands of local groups in red, blue, and purple states, and in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Our mission is to power and lift up a grassroots movement of local groups to defeat the Trump agenda, elect progressive leaders, and realize bold progressive policies.

Grassroots donations, not foundations or large gifts, are our single largest source of funding. That means we’re accountable to, and fueled by, Indivisibles on the ground. Chip in $7 to keep fueling our movement.
