MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS February 9 - February 15, 2021 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Wednesday, it was announced that South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration has ordered a new series of long-range air defense radars. The radars, to be developed by LIG Nex1 are set to be delivered by 2027 and are planned to cover the Korean air defense identification zone amid the growing threat from North Korea. On Thursday, it was reported that a civilian aircraft was struck by Houthi Rebels at the Abha International Airport in Asir, Saudi Arabia during a drone attack. Just four days earlier, the Saudi-led military coalition intercepted four-armed Houthi drones targeted towards southern Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, Iran’s army test fired a sophisticated short-range missile. Gen. Kioumars Heidari said that the “smart” missile's range was 300 km, or 186 miles, and that it's capable to work under “any weather condition.” On Monday, a volley of rockets targeted the Kurdish regional capital in northern Iraq. The attack was the first time Western military or diplomatic installations have been targeted in Iraq in nearly two months. At least five civilians were wounded and one was in critical condition. Also on Monday, it was reported that components of the U.S. Army’s Iron Dome system are expected to participate in a shoot-off in the third quarter of fiscal 2021 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. In Fort Bliss, Texas, U.S. Army units will spend the next year training, testing, and working with the systems to prepare for operational deployment. Click here to read all of this week's headlines.
