Dear John,

President Biden has inherited a Social Security program that is on a weaker footing than when Donald Trump took office. But the new President has pledged to strengthen and expand the program — both by working with Congress and through executive action. In fact, President Biden is repairing the damage the previous Administration did to Social Security and is well positioned to safeguard this popular program.

Yet, standing in his way are powerful fiscal hawks in Congress who remain fixated on the false assumption that Social Security drives the federal debt, and have proposed cutting so-called “entitlements” after enacting the 2017 tax windfall for the wealthy and big corporations, which swelled the deficit by nearly $2 trillion. Their solution for “reforming” Social Security is to slash benefits for current and future workers and retirees.

Passing ambitious Social Security improvements may prove difficult in the Senate, where allies of earned benefits hold the slimmest of majorities. And President Biden will be under enormous pressure to abandon his promises to Social Security and older Americans in order to appease lawmakers who are suddenly concerned about reining in soaring budget deficits.

But we’ve faced down steeper odds than this in the past and come out victorious!

John, that’s why the National Committee is leveraging the energy of our millions of members and supporters, including you, to fight for policies that will help older Americans. And we are counting on your support right now to help us convince newly elected officials in Washington that now is the time to pass meaningful legislation that will strengthen your retirement and health security. So please help us build support for President Biden’s ambitious agenda for Social Security with a contribution in whatever amount you can afford today!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
President & CEO
