Dear Friends,

RPNM continues to share some thoughts and observations from our C-4 Group--Communities of Color Christian Conservatives Group during Black History Month.

The following is from Stephanie Kennedy,
the C-4 Group Director and former RPNM CD-1 Vice Chair:

THE CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

When I think of Black History Month, I think of my love for the arts and music, which takes me back to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, better known as the Black cultural mecca and the “New Negro Movement.” This location was the destination spot for many of the black people fleeing the Jim Crow Deep South. Ironically, an enormous amount of good came out of that era: African American music, dance, art, fashion, literature, theater and politics, all centered in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City. It is said that this new identity led to a greater social consciousness of the Black man as educated, urban, and cosmopolitan sophistication.

The movement fueled those oppressed and gave way to self-determination with an empowered identity among Blacks. Additionally, Blacks were mostly conservative in their ideology with Christianity as their foundation, yet fun was well respected. Although some of the clubs were exclusively for white audiences like the Cotton Club, it paved the way for blacks to be part of the mainstream music scene.

Unfortunately, today’s arts and music pales in comparison to previous generations, as the elder body of work was compelling, inspiring, and revolutionizing. Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, W.E. B. Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, and Josephine Baker to name a few were prolific artists to be remembered. With that said, Black History Month should be celebrated and cultivated for all to be inspired and encouraged with renewed optimism every day of the year. Maya Angelou says it best, “Won’t it be wonderful when black history and Native American history and Jewish history and all of U.S. history is taught from one book. Just U.S. history.”
