Nobody who works a full-time job should be living in poverty. Period.
When I was in high school, the company my dad worked for was sold. He lost his job and my family was eventually forced onto public assistance. My brother and I relied on reduced-price meals at our public school and we used food stamps to put dinner on the table — until they ran out. It was tough, and we probably wouldn’t have made it through without government support.
In Illinois today there are over 2 million workers earning less than $15 an hour and struggling to get by. I understand the challenges they are facing because I’ve faced similar challenges myself. That’s part of why I feel so strongly about this issue.
A strong national minimum wage levels the playing field for businesses who value their workers and already pay them a living wage. It boosts the economy, increases consumer spending to support businesses and helps those families who are struggling to scrape by.
It’s long past time we raise the minimum wage to meet the rising cost of living. If you agree, sign my petition here:
