It was so cold. Most of my feathers were gone, and I had no way to warm up. Hypothermia had set in. I closed my eyes, which were burning from the ammonia-filled air, and waited, unable to move. I didn’t have much time left.
The next thing I knew, I was being gently picked up. A woman’s kind eyes looked down at me as she secured me to her body with a scarf, under her layers of warm clothes, sharing her body heat with me.
She and other activists saved the lives of 300 hens that day, including mine. She took me home with her and showed me love I didn’t know was possible from humans. I’m one of the few lucky ones.
