350 Eastside

Hi John

The Climate Alliance, action requested -

From wildfires and drought to flooding and sea-level rise, we know that we need to take bold action now to secure a climate-resilient future for all Washingtonians. But right now, Washington’s cities and counties are not adequately planning for the climate crisis.

The Growth Management Act (GMA), a foundational state law that creates state-wide guidance and requirements for our built and natural environment, has not been updated since its creation almost 30 years ago and does not address the climate crisis at all.

As our state changes and grows, we must amend the GMA to help our local communities plan for and mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis including, drought, wildfires, sea-level rise, and landslides.

That is exactly what House Bill 1099 would do! HB 1099 would update the GMA to ensure that our communities are planning for a climate-resilient future that protects our most vulnerable communities while reducing our state’s greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled.

Can you contact your state legislators today in support of HB 1099?

HB 1099 has its first hearing in the Appropriations Committee tomorrow, Feb. 16th, at 1:30 PM. It is vital that this committee decides to move this bill to a floor vote before the committee cutoff on February 22nd.

By passing HB 1099, we can ensure that our cities reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation while protecting our communities and natural environment from the accelerating impacts of a changing climate.

Contact your state legislators today to support this important legislation!

Washington can’t wait any longer to mitigate and prepare for the climate crisis in front of us.

Onward,

Lauren Breynaert

Coalition Director

350 Seattle, invitation to participate -

Keystone XL has been stopped, but Minnesota's tar sands bomb, Line 3, is still under construction — violating treaty rights, threatening over 200 bodies of water with an oil spill, and hastening climate change with a carbon equivalent of 50 coal-fired power plants. President Biden revoked the federal permits for KXL; he can do the same for Line 3, and halt construction with the stroke of a pen.

MN350 and allies are leading an escalating campaign against this pipeline and fighting alongside an Indigenous-led frontline resistance in northern MN. Lawsuits against Line 3 have been filed by many opposing groups, including sovereign Indigenous nations, yet construction on the ground is accelerating

What can we do, here in the Puget Sound region? Quite a lot!

1.    You can still RSVP for the #DefundLine3 Campaign Kick-Off event TOMORROW, February 16th at 5 PST. At the campaign kick-off event, Anishinaabe frontline leaders Tara Houska and Taysha Martineau will share stories from the frontlines, and organizers will walk through the campaign plan step-by-step, let you know how you can participate at every stage, and give you the tools you need to get involved.

2.    This link has both phonebank and text-bank options for tomorrow and Wednesday.

3.    There is an Art Storm happening all day Wednesday, from 6am PST to 6pm PST--join for any of it!

4.    This link has phonebank options for the next five Wednesdays.

5.    And if you haven't yet, click here to send the CEOs of 18 major banks a message that they MUST walk away from Enbridge and Line 3 on March 31st.

Biden has the power to stop this pipeline that would carry nearly a million barrels of tar sands per day through untouched wetlands and the treaty territories of Anishinaabe people, through the Mississippi headwaters, and to the shores of Lake Superior. Now is the time to show the strength of our opposition to this illegally approved project and make our demands clear: We must stop Line 3.

In solidarity,
350 Seattle

350.org, Build Back Fossil Free (BBFF), please engage –

The Build Back Fossil Free Campaign (https://buildbackfossilfree.org/) is supported by a broad coalition of environmental, business and community organizations and calls on President Biden to:

§ Protect and invest in the Black, Indigenous, Brown, and working-class communities that have borne the brunt of fossil fuel pollution and climate disaster.

§ End the era of fossil fuel production, reject fossil fuel projects, and eliminate giveaways to oil, gas, and coal corporations

§ Launch a national climate mobilization to Build Back Fossil Free, delivering jobs, justice, and opportunity for all.

The name is based on Biden’s campaign promise to “Build Back Better” after the pandemic and saying “You cannot build back better without building back fossil-free.”

The goal of the campaign is to get the Biden Administration to apply a climate test to all new and pending federal applications for permitting of any new fossil fuel infrastructure and to take 25 Executive Actions to move quickly in response to the Climate Emergency.

The first nationwide 350.org actions are planned for March 29 through April 3 when Congress will be in recess and will focus on stopping the federal permit for the Line 3 Pipeline in Minnesota which will move tar sands oil from North Dakota to Duluth where it can be shipped to refineries.

Please go to https://buildbackfossilfree.org/ to sign up for the campaign and get updates on events in our area.

Stay well,

Emily, Lin, Lynn, Marilyn, Phil and Sara
