In the United States, our culture promotes college as a way to climb out of poverty. Yet, divestment from public education has forced over 45 million people into staggering debt in hopes of obtaining a degree.
Now, the coronavirus pandemic has caused an economic downturn, eliminating jobs.
Community members are rationing food and medical supplies, losing access to healthcare, and scraping together monthly rent and mortgage payments, all while still having to pay student debt.
While President Joe Biden has taken important first steps to protect borrowers by pausing federal student loan payments until September 30 and supports Congress canceling up to $10,000 of federal student loans for borrowers, we need him to sign an executive order that cancels student debt altogether for federal borrowers.

The student debt crisis is an issue of both race and class inequities as working class Black, brown, and Indigenous people are targets of predatory practices, borrowing at high rates to cover rising tuition fees. As Rep. Ayanna Pressley stated on day one of the Biden administration: “Black women carry more student debt than any other group in America.”
Joe Biden has the power to take action for racial and economic justice by signing an executive order within his first 100 days in office to cancel ALL student debt for federal borrowers.
Sign the petition: Urge President Joe Biden to cancel all student debt for federal borrowers.
