Dear Friend,
With the impeachment trial as a backdrop, and election issues getting a lot of attention, I recently joined two other Secretaries of State on a piece for CNN about how best to safeguard our future elections.
Here's the bottom line:
-
Despite huge challenges, like a once-in-a-century pandemic, the 2020 election was a huge success - with Minnesota once again the #1 state in America for voter turnout.
-
We need to build on our progress in 2020 by expanding access to the ballot box, improving election infrastructure, and bolstering election security.
-
In Minnesota, our laws are strong - but they could be even better, which is why I support reforms like restoring the vote for those who have left prison behind, streamlined voter registration, and pre-registration for high school students.
-
Disinformation about the 2020 election persists, and we can't let it be an excuse for those who leverage lies to pass laws that shut out voters.
The message is catching on. And despite the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, democracy is making a comeback. It's up to us to sustain it.
Thanks for supporting me in this critical work.
Steve
