MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MCRGO MONDAY E'NEWS What's the Story with H.R. 127? MCRGO has received several dozen contacts on the federal H.R. 127 "Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act." That not surprising given how outrageously terrible this bill is. It's the most draconian firearms legislation ever introduced in Congress. It would: Establish a publicly searchable gun registry Require a federal license to possess firearms & ammunition Require the purchase of firearms insurance from the federal government Ban numerous rifles, pistols, shotguns, larger caliber ammo, and any magazine with a capacity of over 10 rounds Require mandatory minimum prison sentences and fines for violations Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) has a long history of sponsoring gun control legislation. H.R. 127 is a consolidation of many of her past proposals. None of these past proposals saw any action from the United States House of Representatives. With no co-sponsors on H.R. 127, it's unlikely that this legislation will see any action either. If it did, it would almost certainly face a challenge in the United States Supreme Court. H.R. 127 serves as a distraction from gun control proposals by the Biden administration and his allies in Congress. These include denial of due process through Red Flag legislation, home firearms storage mandates, a new ban on modern rifles, expanded background checks with waiting periods, ending liability protections for firearms manufacturers, limits on the number of firearms and rounds of ammunition that can be purchased, and a ban of online sales of firearms and ammunition. It's not just Democrats. For example, last week, Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced legislation that would prevent innocent people from obtaining guns and strengthen the federal government’s firearms overreach in the guise of fighting terrorism. With both the House and Senate so narrowly divided, some Republican support will be necessary for any gun control legislation that moves through Congress. Don't be fooled by H.R. 127. While it's a terrible bill, it's not worth the widespread viral internet attention it has received because it won't pass the House. It's meant to deflect attention from real attempts to further infringe on our rights. Particularly beware of attempts to collect your personal information in the form of online petitions. You can have far more impact by interacting with your Congressional representatives on social media and at their town halls.
