John,
I am disappointed and ashamed that the Senate voted yesterday to acquit Trump. But the truth is, I’m not surprised.
GOP Senators were the jurors in the former president’s trial, but how can you be a juror if you were an accomplice to the crime?
Since the House introduced a resolution to impeach Trump for inciting a white supremacist insurrection, the GOP has made every attempt to smear our efforts as a “publicity” campaign and fight back against the idea of accountability.
They made this clear when I spoke on the House Floor to share why it’s so critical we remove the white supremacist-in-chief and Republicans reacted by BOOING me on the House floor. They can try all they want, but they will never silence us, John.
I have a duty to represent my constituents and legislate in defense of Black lives — a duty that every GOP Senator who voted to acquit Trump failed to fulfill yesterday. I’m looking at you, Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz.
They signed up for this job. They chose to run for office and take on this role to represent our neighbors, but it looks like they only want to serve a small portion, including their own interests. So I’ll call them out any chance we get.
We can never forget that at the core of the January 6th insurrection was an attempt to throw out Black, brown, and Indigenous votes. Those were the votes that they did not want to count. The Confederate battle flag leading the charge confirms that.
We all deserve liberty, freedom, and justice. This is why I was proud to support impeachment, introduced legislation to expel seditionists from Congress, and why I won’t stop fighting until that future is guaranteed for ALL Americans.
There’s clearly a lot of work ahead of us to repair the damage Trump’s administration has done to our democracy and to dismantle the forces of white supremacy in our country. If you’re ready to dive into this work with me, will you chip in $5 or anything you can to support our movement?
