Dear Friend,
Since January 6th, our nation has struggled to comes to terms with the reality that a president incited a violent insurrection in our nation's Capitol—claiming the lives of five people and wounding many more.
In the weeks following, my fellow impeachment managers and I have made the case to senators—and to the American public—the need to hold Donald Trump accountable for crimes against our nation.
If you were watching the trial, you saw the unmistakable evidence of traumatic violence at our Capitol by insurrectionists directed by their commander in chief. Yesterday, senators voted 57-43 to convict the president of high crimes and misdemeanors—the most bipartisan impeachment conviction vote in United States history. Though a majority of senators voted to convict, including seven Republicans, it failed to reach the two-thirds threshold needed to pass.
To the senators who, despite overwhelming evidence, lacked the courage to convict, I remind you of the words of Margaret Chase Smith—a senator during the McCarthy era, who possessed the strength of character to put the Constitution and her oath over her party:
"I do not want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny—fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear. . . . I do not want to see the Republican Party win that way. While it may be a fleeting victory for the Republican Party, it would be a more lasting defeat..."
History will remember those 43 senators, and the damage to the Republican Party and our Republic will be theirs to bear.
Though it was not the outcome we sought, I am proud of the case we put forward under the brilliant guidance of lead impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin. Donald Trump will remain forever impeached—and the world will remember the vivid and disturbing violence he caused.
And as witnesses to this all, I thank you for your part in this trial. Your support, words of encouragement, and passion for justice and truth gave me strength throughout this difficult time.
As we move forward, under a new president whose humanity and ability stand in such stark contrast to the last four years, I remain hope-filled and ready to build back better.
This Presidents' Day weekend, let us remember what true leadership looks like.
Most sincerely,
Madeleine
