Tom Nelson
Few things in life are more important than family. Reading all these emails I punctually drop in your inboxes you’d think politics is life. With 18 hour campaign days I sometimes think that is the case, too.

I am a blessed man. I have a wife and two kids; and Lucy, a little yorkshire terrier to boot. I am told it is a million dollar family and I couldn’t agree more.

Two years ago to the month, my wife Maria was diagnosed with breast cancer. We didn’t know if she would survive. The thought of our Mary and George growing up not knowing their mom haunted us for a weekend until a team of cancer doctors, radiologists and surgeons assured us it was winnable, 90 percent, in fact.

A lot of family and love got us through 18 months of treatment. But, so did health insurance. Let’s be honest.

My wife and before her, my mom who died of breast cancer, were lucky to have good health insurance. Over 30 million Americans have NO insurance, the numbers growing everyday with the COVID crisis. How do they pay for mammograms? Do they even get one? How many cancer cases, heart conditions or other diseases go undetected and how many lives are taken which could have been saved had they been able to afford health care?

This is one more reason why I support Medicare for All.

It is patently unfair that some have health insurance and have the means to treat their maladies and cure terminable illness and some do not.

My wife and my mom and the thirty million Americans without any insurance fuels my passion and drives this campaign. If we can insure just one more person it would be worth it. But let’s make it really count. Let’s insure everyone and make sure in the richest country on Earth, no one has to lose a loved one because they lack health care.

Happy Valentine's Day!
