Facebook just banned false information about vaccines from its platform in order to curb the COVID-19 misinformation crisis, but the damage has already been done.
This is just one of many instances where Facebook has allowed wild conspiracy theories to go unregulated for far too long -- only last year was Holocaust denial propagranda banned from the platform, and it took Donald Trump inciting a violent siege on the Capitol for the company to censure his false allegations of election fraud.
Facebook is beginning to weigh the pros and cons of allowing political ads back on their platform -- but how can we be sure that their relaxed regulations won't allow Republicans to continue peddling misinformation campaigns in full force?
We've seen just how much harm Facebook's relaxed screenings have caused to our democracy, and Democrats have too.
