Not guilty.

That’s what Senate Republicans decided yesterday when they voted to acquit former President Trump despite clear evidence -- in plain view and witnessed in real time -- of Trump inciting an insurrection at the Capitol to overturn November’s free and fair election.

For the second time, Senate Republicans have chosen fear and political ambition over our democracy and our country.

Each one of my Senate colleagues and I swore an oath to uphold our Constitution, defend our country, and be an impartial juror. Following the facts of this case, there is no question of what happened on January 6th.

The evidence is indisputable: The American people saw the video evidence. They saw what Trump's lies incited, and they saw his failure to defend our country. Law enforcement officers were beaten and attacked. Five people died, including a Capitol Police officer.

I don’t know how anyone who saw the attack at the Capitol -- whether watching from home on TV or witnessing in person like my colleagues and workers in the Capitol in Congress and I did -- and not come to the conclusion that Trump must be held accountable for this attack on our country.

And yet, most Senate Republicans have once again failed to stand up for the rule of law.

Where Senate Republicans failed to act, we must. Yesterday must reinforce our mission to stand up for and expand our democracy, and build back our country better than before, better than what we saw on January 6th.

With gratitude,

Sherrod
