Friend,
President Biden took swift action to block the Keystone XL pipeline. But there’s another disastrous tar sands pipeline underway that violates Indigenous rights—and President Biden has the power to halt construction immediately.
Indigenous water protectors and allies in Minnesota have been fighting Enbridge’s Line 3 project for years. But now the bulldozers have arrived to plow through sacred wild rice watersheds, over 800 wetlands, and 200+ bodies of water in Ojibwe treaty territory. If built, the pipeline would carry the pollution equivalent to 50 coal power plants, along with the risk of massive oil spills.
President Biden has the power to stop this project. He can revoke the water permits granted by Trump and halt Line 3 construction immediately. But he’ll only act if we generate enough public pressure, so we’ve joined with dozens of groups on the ground, including MN350 and Honor the Earth, to deliver thousands of petitions calling on President Biden to stop Line 3.
Please sign our petition calling on President Joe Biden to #StopLine3 immediately and invoke a climate test for all pipelines.
Here in Michigan, we have plenty of experience with the Canadian corporation Enbridge. About 70 years ago, Enbridge built two pipelines known as Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. The aging pipelines could rupture and cause a catastrophic spill, threatening multiple Great Lakes and the people who live near them.
Enbridge already caused the nation’s largest-ever land-based oil spill in Michigan in 2010, when one of its other pipelines spilled 1.1 million gallons of tar sands bitumen into the Kalamazoo River. Their tarnished safety record, plus the deterioration of key support structures for the Line 5 pipelines, led our Governor Gretchen Whitmer to order the removal of the dangerous Line 5 pipelines by May 2021. But Enbridge has announced that they will defy the order, suing our state to block action.
This is just a glimpse of what’s ahead for Minnesota, whose Governor actually supports the Line 3 pipeline expansion. Similar to Line 5, the Line 3 pipeline was built about 60 years ago and has also deteriorated, with current structural concerns preventing it from operating at full capacity. It should be shut down for safety reasons, not expanded to double its capacity or rerouted through precious waterways.
Continuing—and expanding—Enbridge’s pipelines threatens the Great Lakes and our global climate. We cannot allow Enbridge to violate Indigenous rights, pollute sacred waters, and lock in fossil fuel dependence and climate devastation for decades to come.
We must put the health, safety, and future of our people and our environment before the profit of corporate polluters.
And the situation is even more dire now that police are cracking down on Indigenous-led resistance to the Line 3 pipeline. We need national pressure now.
Sign the petition to tell President Joe Biden: Please revoke the federal water permit granted by Trump and halt Line 3 construction immediately.
Every signature will be personally delivered to the Biden administration, and we’ll share our number of signatures with the press to show our momentum.
Thanks for all you do,
Rashida
