The majority of Senators, 57 to be exact, honored their oath of office by voting to convict Donald Trump for inciting a violent insurrection on January 6th.
This was the most bipartisan impeachment and conviction vote in history.
I am so proud of Representative Raskin and the brilliant team of House Managers who made an irrefutable and damning case proving that Donald Trump deserved to be convicted.
On the merits, this case wasn’t close.
And yet, so many Senate Republicans still chose partisanship over objective reality and fair elections.
To be clear, I commend the Republican Senators who voted to convict. It took political courage to vote their conscience, and we all know they will be mercilessly attacked by Trump’s allies for protecting our democracy.
The remaining Republican Senators who voted to acquit have shown their true and dishonorable character. Senator McConnell’s ridiculous excuse for not voting to convict Donald Trump is of his own making. It was his decision to keep the Senate shut down so the Senate could not receive the Articles of Impeachment immediately.
While I am not surprised by their actions, I am still disgusted. Their decisions today are despicable and dishonorable. Their refusal to hold Trump accountable for inciting a deadly insurrection will be judged by history.
But, we will not be deterred. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I will do everything in my power to protect our democracy from future tyrants like Donald Trump.
I sincerely hope more Republicans join me in that effort. They will have a chance soon.
Some things are political, but today was a test of patriotism.
Our country deserves Senators who don’t fail that test.
