Dear John,
------------------------------------------------------------

Founded by Last Chance for Animals in 1988, Pet Theft Awareness Day ([link removed]) is observed annually on Valentine's Day to raise public awareness about the issue of pet theft, and educate the public on how to protect companion animals.

Pet theft is an issue that largely goes unreported to law enforcement, but experts estimate each year in the United States, approximately two million companion animals are stolen. Pet Theft Awareness Day is observed on Valentine's Day, because a rise in thefts usually occur around this day. Learn what you can do to keep your animals safe and educate others.
HOW YOU CAN HELP ([link removed])
* Visit LCAnimal.org ([link removed]) to learn more about Pet Theft Awareness Day and how you can protect your companion animals.

* Watch and Share Dealing Dogs ([link removed]) , a documentary about LCA's work into pet theft and Class B Dealers, for free on YouTube.

* Educate Others: Share this message with family and friends.

One of the main reasons pets are stolen is for money. "Flipping" occurs when an animal is stolen and sold for profit. The stolen animals are sometimes sold to new owners, puppy mills, or backyard breeders. Stolen animals can also be used as bait in dogfighting rings or resold by USDA Class B licensed animal dealers to research laboratories for experimentation.

How to Protect Your Companion Animal:
* Never leave your companion animals unsupervised
* Properly identify your pets with a collar, tag, and microchip
* Spay and neuter your pets
* Keep up-to-date information on your pet (recent photo and description)
* Always be aware of your surroundings.

Together, We Can Make a Difference!
