John xxxxxx,
For the second time in U.S. history, the Senate voted to acquit ex-president Donald Trump.
We needed 17 Republican Senators to stand on the right side of history and put country over party. Only 7 did.
The Republican Senators who voted to acquit could have demonstrated patriotic courage. Instead, they displayed pathetic cowardice.
Over the course of this trial, we saw the abundance of disturbing evidence proving Trump pushed the Big Lie of “massive election fraud,” did everything within his means — including lawsuits, involving the Department of Justice and threatening Republican secretaries of state, election officials and his own Vice President to lie or stop the vote — to prevent the peaceful transfer of power and then incited his followers to “stop the steal.” With force.
Blood was spilled. Lives were lost. My colleagues on both sides of the aisle were evacuating and fearing for their lives. And now we know that as all of this was unfolding, Trump refused to call his violent mob off. When GOP leader Kevin McCarthy told the former president that these terrorists were his followers, Trump said, “I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.” Those were his thoughts as the Vice President and members of Congress fled for their lives.
Now, Senate Republicans have indicated with their vote they they don’t care. They’re okay with this. And they’re okay with Trump running for office and carrying out this chaos again.
They are complicit. And we must never forget that.
As we look ahead, let’s make one thing clear to these Republicans who voted to acquit Trump: We will hold you accountable for failing to hold Trump accountable — at the ballot box in 2022.
