Hello —

When I was first sworn into office as your Senator, I took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and rule of law. That’s why, today, I voted to convict former President Donald J. Trump.

For years, Donald Trump has fanned the flames of white supremacy and far-right extremism that threaten our democracy. And we saw him incite a violent, deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol just weeks ago.

On that day, people sent by Trump chanted about assassinating and lynching members of Congress. Five people are now dead and numerous police officers were injured.

All because Trump and his enablers perpetuated the big lie that the election was stolen, and did everything they could to overturn the results. He put his own political interests ahead of the interests of our country.

My duty to you and to our democracy remains the same: To uphold the U.S. Constitution and rule of law — and the principle that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States.

As a member of the Senate, I swore an oath to "do impartial justice, according to the Constitution and the law" and I take this oath seriously. The Senate held a fair trial that included overwhelming evidence of Trump's guilt. I fulfilled my duty and made a judgment based on my job as a juror charged with providing impartial justice.

I believe it was the right thing to do, and I’m committed to continuing to fight for you and our democracy.

Thank you.

— Senator Tina Smith
