John,
For the second time in two years, the House of Representatives has held Donald Trump accountable for his actions through impeachment.
And for the second time in two years, far too few members of Donald Trump's party did their duty to our nation. For the second time, after a Democratic-led House impeached him, far too many Republican senators voted to acquit.
Members of Congress were witnesses to the violence Trump incited. We've learned in the weeks since the insurrection, especially through the evidence given in the trial, just how close our elected representatives came to being massacred. They were moments, or in some cases mere feet, away from a violent mob that had strung up a noose outside. Most Republicans have apparently decided to shield their eyes from the truth.
Despite Trump's acquittal, this was the most bipartisan impeachment of a president in American history.
Ten House Republicans joined all their Democratic colleagues and voted to impeach. Seven Republican senators held loyalty to their country over loyalty to their party and voted with every Democrat to convict.
Majorities in both houses of Congress upheld their oaths of office and did what they could to protect our nation.
This small group of Republicans of conscience -- those who have not ceded the GOP to Trumpism and conspiracy theories -- won't be enough to sustain the health of our government.
We have to unseat the Trump allies who remain in power. We have to elect representatives with the moral courage to protect the United States from enemies without and within. We have to make sure that nothing like the Capitol insurrection ever happens again.
That will be my focus this year, next year, and for as long as it takes.
Yours,
Christy Smith
