Folks — I just voted to convict Donald J. Trump. Give me a moment to explain.

January 6 was a tragic and unprecedented day for our nation. As members of Congress worked to faithfully carry out our constitutional duty to certify the 2020 election, we witnessed a disgraceful, violent mob attack on the U.S. Capitol — which led to five deaths and several injured police officers.

Trump incited this violent insurrection against our democracy, and rather than condemn the attack — he encouraged it.

The former president broke his oath to support and defend the U.S. Constitution. And after listening to the case presented by the House impeachment managers, I concluded Donald Trump was guilty and supported the House’s effort to hold him accountable.

My decision was not made lightly, but I know in my heart that it was the right one. Trump and his enablers have wreaked havoc on our democracy for far too long, and we have a lot of work ahead of us to repair it — which means I’m going to need your support every step of the way.
