John,
This is a sad day for our democracy. Donald Trump incited an insurrection to overthrow the elected government of the United States. 43 senators stood with him.
It does not end here. A partisan minority of senators may have been willing to place loyalty to Donald Trump over loyalty to the United States of America, but that does not mean state and federal prosecutors will or that the American people will. Donald Trump’s behavior was clearly criminal and was clearly abhorrent. For more, read our statement.
It is shameful that this many senators stood with a president who incited a violent insurrection. It is shameful that he will avoid accountability in this form. But he has not avoided all forms of accountability.
This is a sad day for our democracy, but it is not the end of our work. It’s only the beginning of restoring and strengthening our democracy.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
