I went into Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial promising to fulfill my duty as an impartial juror and working to ensure the American people had access to the truth. But it’s clear that a number of my Republican colleagues had a different outlook. They chose to put their own political self-interests ahead of standing up for our democracy — a dangerous signal to send to future presidents. Donald Trump broke his oath to uphold the Constitution when he incited a violent insurrection that tragically turned deadly. I voted to convict him to make clear that this behavior shouldn’t stand. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: It’s a tough day for this country, and for all Americans who believe that no one — not even a former president — is above the law. But I am encouraged that some of my Republican colleagues joined me today in holding Donald Trump accountable. They prove that this wasn’t about politics to many of us. We now need to take this energy and anger we have and do something positive with it — we need to work together and strengthen this democracy so a future president won’t be able to so easily divide the country. I promise I will do my part. Thanks for pitching in, if you can. — Jon |
