Team, Black History Month is a time of year that always makes me think fondly about my late father, Lucien Holman. His story is emblematic of the strength, bravery, and determination of so many African-Americans from that era. A dentist by trade, he was active in the civil rights movement and would eventually rise to become president of his NAACP chapter in Illinois. I cherish this photo of him sitting with President Johnson at the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
As a little girl growing up in the 1960s, I had an up-close look at the work he so passionately engaged in. I even got to attend rallies, marches, and protests with iconic leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. and later with my good friend and hero, the late Congressman John Lewis. Democrats in Congress are committed to continuing the fight. That’s why strengthening voting rights and addressing the scourge of senseless gun violence remain some of our top priorities, including the Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys Act that my fellow NewDems enthusiastically endorsed and helped make law last year. This month, we honor the legacies of civil rights leaders like my father — and resolve to continue their important work of uplifting Black and Brown communities and fighting against injustices and inequality. The connective tissue between that era and today is unmistakable, and it’s an honor to follow in my father’s footsteps as we embark on this journey towards a better, more equitable future. So this Black History Month, team — let’s remember all those who came before us as we look to the work we have left to complete. With love, Lucy
