The Senate is expected to vote TODAY in its impeachment trial of Donald Trump.

• This vote is about more than Trump himself.

• This vote is about the viability of democracy in America.

• If the Senate does not convict Trump, it will in effect be licensing the use (or at least the threat) of violence by those seeking to achieve or retain political power.

• Senators who do not vote to convict Trump will have blood on their hands the next time he or some other political leader provokes unhinged individuals or violent mobs to target his rivals or to attack the Capitol, a statehouse, or a city hall.

Preventing democracy from devolving into violent authoritarianism should matter to every American — even Republicans in the United States Senate.

PICK UP THE PHONE RIGHT NOW AND CALL BOTH OF YOUR SENATORS.

1. Dial the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. (Be patient, the Capitol is getting a lot of calls these days.)

2. When you get through to the switchboard, follow the prompts to be connected to the office of one of your senators. (Don’t worry, you won’t have to talk to your senator, you’ll just leave a message with a staffer or on voicemail.)

3. Leave this quick message:

I am calling to urge my senator to reject political violence and defend our democracy by voting to convict Donald Trump.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for your other senator.
