Dear Revealer,

In May, we published the first investigation in our ongoing series about the elder care industry, which has become a burgeoning, multibillion-dollar business as the aging population in the U.S. grows. Tragically, the homespun ideal of many of these residential care homes belies an ugly reality: employers who profit by exploiting and at times even enslaving their workers. We exposed rampant wage theft in the industry that has pushed many elder-care workers into poverty and horrific safety issues and working conditions that, in some cases, violate the law.

In response to our reporting, state and federal officials are calling for reforms to protect these workers. And last week, we published a new story in this series that revealed that some operators of these homes also endanger or neglect their residents, sometimes with dire consequences.

To bring you this story, we analyzed thousands of licensing records and hundreds of U.S. Department of Labor cases in California and conducted dozens of  interviews with workers, residents and their family members.

And we’re not stopping now. But I need your help to keep the pressure on. Will you donate today and help us make a difference?

Together, we are a force for good.
