Dick Durbin

John,

Today was the last day of arguments in former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial.

Yesterday, the House impeachment managers rested their case. Today, President Trump’s lawyers made their case -- and a verdict could come as soon as this weekend.

There is no question that this reckless former President must be held accountable for inciting an insurrection on January 6, which claimed the lives of Officer Brian Sicknick and several others and left 140 Capitol police and D.C. Metropolitan police officers injured in the line of duty that day.

There is a mountain of evidence, including video from the President’s speech before the insurrection and the many tweets he sent challenging the legitimacy of the election. Not only that -- the jurors in this trial, the members of the U.S. Senate, were eyewitnesses to the terrible events of that day. In fact, we are fulfilling our constitutional duty from the crime scene itself.

In order to convict Donald Trump, at least 17 Republicans will need to put their country before their party and do the right thing. Regardless of the outcome, the American people, and future generations, will know what happened that day.

I will keep working as hard as I can in the Senate to root out the scourge of white supremacist domestic terrorism in our country. We simply cannot allow hatred, fear, and violence to win.

My best,

Dick Durbin
