** Our Common Purpose Champion Service Year Alliance Releases National Poll Data
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
New polling data released in late January by the Serve America Together ([link removed]) campaign show that a majority of Americans support President Biden’s focus on healing the nation and believe an expansion of civilian national service opportunities for young Americans can help accomplish that goal. President Biden’s inaugural speech focused on the importance of national unity, that we never fail when we act together. More than three-quarters of respondents to the poll said they support Congress passing legislation that would expand national service opportunities, such as AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps. and Eric Liu:
American Democracy and Civic Participation in 2021
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, February 23 from 2:00-3:00pm EST/1:00-2:00pm CST

The American public’s trust in government is at an all-time low. Political partisanship, a disrupted media environment, and economic inequality weaken our faith in the system. Meanwhile, money in politics, barriers to voting, and distorted representation in Washington amplify the voices of a select few at the expense of others. In the last Presidential election, claims of election fraud led to a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, threatening the peaceful transfer of power.

Despite all of this, many Americans still believe that a healthy democracy with responsive political institutions can be achieved.

Join Chicago Community Trust President & CEO Helene Gayle in conversation with Danielle Allen, the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University and Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, and Eric Liu, Cofounder and CEO of Citizen University, two cochairs of the Commission on the Practice of Democratic Citizenship. American Academy of Arts & Sciences President David Oxtoby will provide opening remarks.

------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, February 25 from 4:00-5:00pm EST/1:00-2:00pm PST

We are in an age of globalization, centralized power, economic inequality, demographic shifts, political polarization, pandemics, climate change, and radical disruption in media and information environments. We face these converging trends in a constitutional democracy that feels increasingly unresponsive, nonadaptive, and even antiquated to many people.

Commission cochair Danielle Allen will present the Our Common Purpose report and explain how to make the United States a stronger, more equitable democracy.
