The short answer: primary challengers like Jamaal Bowman who amplified
voices in the district and exposed how incumbent Democrats were slow
walking the process of stopping Donald Trump.

That’s why primary challengers are so powerful, and why they’re so vital
for the Democratic Party. But there’s a slew of other progressive
priorities and ideals that Congressmen like Eliot Engel aren’t leading on
as we speak.

Here’s the more complicated answer: for months, the DCCC’s Cheri Bustos
and Democratic leadership has been ignoring the voices of our base,
progressive leaders, and everyone who supported holding Trump accountable
for his brazen sabotage of our democracy. Why?

To try and protect a handful of “front-line” Democrats who’ve been too
scared to….well, act like Democrats. Not impeaching was good for that
group, but it wasn’t so good for the rest of the Democratic Party.

But times have changed. Democrats are not just entitled to their seats
anymore. So when establishment members of Congress stopped listening to
their constituents, primary challengers like Jamaal Bowman stepped up to
demand some answers.

And thus, when we found out that Trump tried to pressure the Ukrainian
President into giving up dirt on his political opponent just one day after
Mueller testified in Congress, the dam broke — those middle of the road
Democrats knew that they had to stand with their voters, because otherwise
they might get primaried.

That’s the power of showing members of Congress that they work for us, not
the other way around. And we need to make sure things don’t go back to how
they were when Medicare for all, a Green New Deal, ending foreign wars, or
the criminal justice reform comes back into Congress.
