Insider's Report: National Committee sends letter to President Biden urging action to protect Social Security and Medicare
|
Right now the Biden Administration is busy working to undo Trump-era rules that hurt older Americans and people with disabilities. As you know, the former Trump Administration spent four years undermining the health and financial security of some of society’s most vulnerable members.
While Trump officials failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act and were not successful in slashing budgets for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, they did manage to utilize executive power to achieve some of their ends, like cutting Social Security Disability Insurance. Simply stated, the goal was to cut spending and resources for social insurance safety net programs to pay for their tax cuts primarily benefiting the wealthy.
In addition to righting these wrongs, the Biden Administration must also use this incredible opportunity to push forward urgently-needed improvements to the Social Security and Medicare programs. That’s why the National Committee has sent a letter to President Biden urging him to reject harmful proposals that would undermine this program and to take action that would strengthen the financial and health security of millions of older Americans.
In addition to preserving Social Security, we strongly support President Biden’s plans to expand Social Security benefits, lifting an additional half a million seniors out of poverty by 2030. This includes his proposals to strengthen the Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), improve the basic benefit for all, provide a higher benefit for the oldest Americans, increase the Special Minimum Benefit, protect widows and widowers, and provide caregiver credits, among other measures.
We also support President Biden’s plans to fully address the coronavirus pandemic, improve the Affordable Care Act, bolster Medicare and Medicaid, and lower prescription drug costs by allowing this program to negotiate directly with drug companies for lower prices.
And the National Committee stands ready to work with the Biden Administration to advance this critical agenda for workers and retirees.

Bad Bills |
|
So-called “fiscal hawks” in Congress have introduced a Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) which would subject earned benefits to devastating spending cuts in order to balance the budget. These are the same politicians who had no problem ramming through the Trump-GOP tax cuts that mainly benefit the wealthiest individuals and huge corporations, and that added more than $1.9 trillion to budget deficits. The National Committee supports responsible government budgeting; however, we oppose a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution because the measure would significantly harm the economy, increase the risk of a federal government default, and force severe cuts in programs that millions of lower- and middle-income Americans rely on, including Social Security and Medicare.
