Dear John,

More than 200,000 people have fled in panic, leaving their belongings behind after new electoral violence in the Central African Republic. Peace had slowly started returning to the Central African Republic after years of fighting, but recently a new wave of violence has forced people to flee their homes again. There are reports of armed guards committing human rights abuses and the fear of sexual violence is growing.

Most refugees are seeking safety in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other neighbouring countries. Once they reach their host communities, refugees are dependent on the shelter, clean water and food that others can spare – many of whom do not have much themselves. Diseases from contaminated water are starting to spread. There has never been a more urgent time to act.

UNHCR staff are on the ground, navigating great distances and challenging road conditions to receive refugees at the border, provide them with documentation to enable access to assistance, emergency supplies and shelter, and bring clean drinking water to those who most need it. With more violence expected in the coming days, the situation is likely to only get more desperate and there simply is not enough for everyone.

Your help is urgently needed to provide essential items, shelter, food, water and healthcare to protect refugees from diseases, including COVID-19. Refugees need your support to survive this unimaginable horror.

Please, donate now and help provide urgent supplies to Central African refugees.

 Thank you,

Johannes Van Gemund
