Friend,
Today marks 212 years since one of the most influential people in American history was born. Abraham Lincoln was born into poverty in a log cabin in Kentucky, and he only briefly attended school as a child.
He went on to become a self-taught lawyer, an abolitionist, our first Republican president, and the Great Emancipator.
Lincoln was a great American leader because of his fealty to our Constitution. He upheld the notion that the president alone is sworn to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution during wartime, as he preserved our American Union during the Civil War.
He urged all Americans to study the Constitution and preserve it.
He is credited with saying, “The people — the people — are the rightful masters of both congresses, and courts — not to overthrow the constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert it.”
We would all do well to spend a few moments today reflecting on Lincoln’s legacy, the historical achievement of our great country in recognizing the freedom of all men and women.
The Republican party still believes in freedom and equality, and we know how precious our Constitution is in preserving liberty for all.
We are the party of Lincoln, and today we are proud to recognize his birthday and all of his many achievements.
Thanks,
John Milligan, Political Director of the Massachusetts Republican Party
