The House managers just wrapped up their case in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump. My House colleagues presented an overwhelming case and I was in awe of the way they fulfilled their solemn duty. Watching the proceedings, I've been horrified. Horrified by the vivid recounting and video evidence of the violence that occurred in the Capitol and danger this attack posed to Members of Congress, staff, law enforcement. And I've been angry. Angry at President Trump's actions that led to that awful day on January 6th and his refusal to act once the attack became clear.  

 

President Trump incited an attack on the US Capitol. This was not a spontaneous event, it was the product of years of lies by President Trump culminating in the Big Lie denying the outcome of the 2020 election. Instead of spending the remainder of his term fighting the coronavirus, President Trump fought to overturn the outcome of a free and fair election. The attack on the Capitol on January 6th was his final attempt to overturn the election. He is the first President in our history to deny the peaceful transfer or power, the cornerstone of our democracy. 

 

Now is the time for Republican leaders to put country over party. This isn't about Democrats or Republicans. This is about our democracy. This is about accountability. And this is about the truth. 

 

President Trump violated his oath of office. He will continue to pose a danger to the country if he is allowed to run for office again. That is why he was impeached by the House and it's why the Senate must vote to convict.
