John,
Since the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump began this week, we’ve heard a very poor defense from his legal team and his Republican loyalists.
The reality is, we know Trump incited a violent insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, pushed dangerous conspiracy theories and the Big Lie that he won the 2020 election, all in a desperate attempt to hold onto power in direct opposition to our democracy and Constitution.
Not only that, we witnessed Trump abuse his office time and time again over the past four years. He used his position in the Oval Office to enrich himself and his family, protect himself and his enablers, undermine the rule of law, erode our democratic institutions, encourage foreign interference in our elections, and avoid accountability.
Even as Trump stands trial as the first president in American history to be impeached twice, our work to protect our democracy from Donald Trump or any who might try to follow in his footsteps isn’t over. We also must pass legislation to ensure that these abuses can never happen again.
That’s why in the coming weeks, I’m reintroducing the Protecting Our Democracy Act, an ambitious set of reforms designed to prevent abuses of presidential power, restore our system of checks and balances, create greater accountability and transparency, and protect our elections. And we need to build momentum to support these sweeping changes.
With Democratic control of both the House and Senate, this is a prime opportunity to pass landmark legislation to prevent future presidents from wreaking the same kind of havoc on our country as Trump did.
Add your name to join me and urge Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act ASAP so we can prevent future abuse of the presidency. [[link removed]]

We can’t go back in time and reverse the damage Trump has done, but we can take action now to protect our democracy for future generations.
