John -- Some Americans shudder at the word “socialism.” Others become enraged at the mere thought of it. But the reality is that socialism isn’t the boogeyman, and it’s nothing new in our country. 

At the close of the Civil War, millions of newly freed slaves and white people were destitute, so President Lincoln created the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. The Freedmen's Bureau provided food, clothing, homes, jobs, education, and healthcare.  

Similar to the Reconstruction era of the1860s, democratic socialist policies today would improve life for millions of people in our country who deserve better. 

There was already massive inequity prior to COVID, but in the past year, millions more people have lost jobs, homes, healthcare, and opportunities to thrive.
