Friend,
This week the House Impeachment managers laid out the events of January 6th clearly. Donald Trump tried to undermine a free and fair election. He assembled and unleashed a violent mob. He watched and cheered as the Capitol was ransacked, people ran for their lives, dozens were injured, and a police officer was murdered. Donald Trump used political violence as a tactic to overturn the will of the American people. He incited an insurrection.
If this conduct is not impeachable, what is? I voted to impeach because there can be no unity without accountability. The Senate must vote to convict Donald Trump and ensure he can never run for office again.
I lived through that day at the Capitol. But I didn't fully grasp the peril of that day until we all saw the graphic videos of the last few days - white supremacists beating police officers with Trump flags, Mike Pence escaping minutes before the mob entered the Senate chamber, a gunshot heard from the House floor.
The mob was there for Donald Trump. They read his tweets aloud as they attacked our democracy.
Donald Trump was their leader and only he could have stopped it. Instead, Donald Trump thanked them. "We love you," he said as the insurrection continued.
The damage is done. But our goal and responsibility is to rebuild our democracy and not be defeated. We will do this together. Add your name here if you agree that there can be no unity without accountability. Thank you, Peter
