Friends -
One thing we know about COVID-19 is that it does an excellent job of taking existing inequalities and accelerating them.
So it will not surprise you to learn that the virus has disproportionately impacted women in our economy because our economy has never treated women equally.
Consider this shocking statistic: out of the 140,000 jobs lost in December of 2020, women accounted for ALL OF THEM. Women lost 156,000 jobs and men gained 16,000.
Not only do women carry most of the childcare burden in homes, but the parts of the economy where women make up a higher percentage of the work-force are less likely to telecommute and they make up some of the hardest hit sectors.
This is a crisis.
That is one reason I support the idea of Marshall Plan for Moms first started by the Founder of Women Who Code, Reshma Saujani.
To start, the plan "implements a short-term monthly payment to moms depending on needs and resources." It would mean passing paid family leave, affordable childcare and pay equity. And it would "establish a task force to create a Marshall Plan for Moms."
Add your name if you agree:
This is a crisis that could set women back for some time to come. As a Washington Post headline put it, the “Coronavirus child-care crisis will set women back a generation."
We need action on this issue. And it starts with making your voice heard.
Stay safe out there,
