John, today is an incredibly difficult day for me – it would have been my wife Mary's birthday.

Maybe we'd have spent the day relaxing by the fireplace, Mary with a new book to read, while we both relished the slower pace of retirement. Maybe our daughters and granddaughters would have set up a family video chat, eager to sing "Happy Birthday."

But I'll never know, because Mary was murdered trying to save the kids at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Our family, our daughters, our granddaughters – we were all robbed of the chance to spend more birthdays and make more memories with Mary. I would give anything to be celebrating it with her, but I can't – instead, every milestone is just another painful reminder that she isn't here.

No other family should ever have to endure this, which is why on days like today, it gives me strength to know that Mary's legacy is carried on through our work to do what she cared about most: helping and protecting children. I'd like to think she'd be really proud of that.

So please, will you join me in remembering Mary's life and honoring her legacy by signing a special remembrance card today for her birthday?

Mary loved her job – she would do anything for her students at Sandy Hook Elementary. Helping children was what she always believed she was meant to do – her life's mission. Even the smallest successes with a child would lift her spirits, and I like to think that the work we're doing to protect children from gun violence is lifting her spirits once again.

I still miss her every single day – but we are doing everything we can to make her proud of us. Thank you so much for helping me honor her on a day that is so tough for our family.
