Dear John, With so much going on in the country and all eyes on Trump’s Senate impeachment trial, we know it’s hard to keep up with every major development. But with Democratic control of the White House and Senate, this is going to be a big year for judges. Now, Democrats must act quickly and nominate judges that are equally diverse in their demographics and experience if we want to reclaim our courts. We were thrilled to see the Biden administration signal their intent to prioritize nominating judges from diverse backgrounds in a letter to Senators in December. And we applauded the important step of ending the American Bar Association’s privileged status in reviewing potential judges even before they were nominated. On Friday, USA Today published an op-ed penned by our President, Nan Aron, on the role of courts in a successful Biden administration. The piece, which you can read here, explains why the courts can’t take a back seat while Biden and Democrats attempt to tackle the many crises the Trump administration left behind. “What’s at stake is nothing less than legal and social progress for future generations. The 20th and early-21st centuries saw enormous strides in rights for women, workers, LGBTQ Americans, and people of color. The Biden administration and Democrats now have an opportunity to build on it. While Trump and Republicans have attempted to roll back this progress, Democrats can stop that trend and reverse it. But we have to fight, and it starts with fighting for our courts.” AFJ’s expertise was also recently featured in The New York Times, Law360, The American Independent, and on MSNBC.com.
