As an Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan, I trained for combat and was prepared for it – but when a mob, directed by President Trump, attacked the Capitol, it was a situation that neither I nor my fellow House members would have fathomed.
John, there was gunfire just feet from the House floor. There were bangs and yelling all around us. And I was ready to fight to protect my colleagues and my country if it came to that. I never thought I would have to use my military training in the U.S. Capitol, but that’s what I nearly had to do.
Armed terrorists determined to prevent the peaceful transfer of power took to the halls of the Capitol – our shrine to democracy – left five of our fellow Americans dead. This violence not only risks countless lives, but the foundation of our democratic institutions.
But, John, my Democratic colleagues and I refused to back down. Once the Capitol grounds were cleared after the attack, the House came back to show our constituents, the American people, and our fear-mongering president that we will not be intimidated. The will of the people will not be stopped by a violent, armed mob, and there will be accountability for the perpetrators of this heinous attack.
In the week that followed, I proudly joined the House in taking swift and decisive action to impeach President Donald Trump, whose incendiary rhetoric directly fueled the attack. Now, it is up to the Senate to convict Trump and hold him accountable for his part in the violence we witnessed at the U.S. Capitol.
