WHAT'S HAPPENING
ABORTION BILL HEADS TO SENATE FLOOR

Tomorrow the Senate will debate and likely vote on SB-10. That bill would repeal New Mexico’s 1969 law that criminalizes abortion. This bill would allow for late-term abortions and provides no protections for girls, women and health care workers. We must protect the unborn and keep life sacred. Stand up against this bill!

Debate on the Senate Floor begins at 11:30am.

EXPANSION OF RED FLAG LAW VIOLATES NEW MEXICANS’ CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS

Left-leaning Democrats continue to try to take away more of our rights. The House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee has rolled HB 193 ([link removed]) which expands the 2020 Red Flag Law. Right now New Mexico law allows police and sheriff’s deputies to petition a court for the surrender of household firearms from people who appear to pose a danger to themselves or others based on sworn affidavits from relatives, employers or school administrators. Now this gun-grab may go a step further: the new bill would allow anyone to report to authorities if they believe there’s a such danger. This again clearly violates peoples' 2nd Amendment rights, due process and search and seizure protocol. It’s scheduled to be voted on in committee on Saturday.

"The scariest thing about the new Red Flag amendment is that anyone can report you now," said Rep. Stefani Lord (R-Sandia Park). "This opens the door to retaliation from a disgruntled employee, an angry ex, or even a stranger reporting you for something taken out of context."

CALL TO ACTION: Contact these members of the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee and tell them to stop this legislation from going through:

LEGISLATION TO ALLOW SCHOOL BOARDS THE ABILITY TO REOPEN SCHOOLS KILLED IN COMMITTEE
The House Health and Human Services Committee today tabled HB-182 ([link removed]) . It's designed to allow local school boards the authority to begin in-person instruction in public schools. That bill would have jump-started many school districts to return students back to class where they belong. The Governor's decision to have online classes during the pandemic has hurt students, teachers and families. The online schooling has put students further behind academically and put others who cannot get internet or access to computers at even greater risk.

LEGISLATION THAT ADDRESSES HUMAN AND DRUG TRAFFICKING WITH A FIREARM VOTED DOWN IN COMMITTEE

House Bill 81 ([link removed]) , an anti-crime bill that would have made it a criminal offense to possess a firearm while trafficking drugs or trafficking people was blocked. While the original bill only included drug trafficking, Rep. Bill Rehm (R-Albuquerque) amended it during the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee hearing to include human trafficking. The idea was to address the serious and ongoing human trafficking problem plaguing New Mexico communities.

“Talk about tone-deaf, the committee must be unaware Albuquerque is the second most violent city in the United States,” said Rep. Bill Rehm. “With fourteen murders in January 2021, and with most murders related to drugs, when will the legislature decide to seriously address the crime problem? The other side of the aisle has frequently highlighted the problem with human trafficking in our state, yet this action signals it is acceptable for human traffickers to carry firearms so they can intimidate their victims."

The amended version of HB 81 was voted down, 3-2 along party lines.
