Dear John

Over 40 African countries have endured a second wave of COVID-19 in the past few months. This devastation will be felt for many years, yet we give thanks to you dear supporter for all you are helping to make possible through both ministry and practical support.

South Africa has had almost 1.5 million confirmed cases and 46,290 deaths this year alone, and has had to pause some vaccine rollouts as they are not effective against the more contagious COVID-19 mutation that emerged in December

Malawi has declared a state of disaster after two cabinet ministers died from COVID-19. The country’s meagre supply of hospital beds is now being overwhelmed by 14,000 active cases. Malawi has only one doctor for every 33,000 people - far below the World Health Organization recommendation of one doctor for every 1,000 head of the population.

"Malawi can't breathe. Lord, please hear our cries and heal our land."

Ethiopia’s COVID-19 cases have surpassed 140,000, the highest number in the east African region. Violence in the Tigray region continues.

Tanzania continues to insist that the country is free of COVID-19 because of the power of prayer and has no plans to vaccinate the community.

In recent weeks AE has lost a well-known family member Stephen Lungu, and various team leaders have recovered from the virus themselves. Currently we are praying for AE International team leader Stephen Mbogo who is battling the virus, and for the international team who have been exposed during the recent prayer retreat.

Whilst we unite together in prayer, practical service and medical advice to overcome this devastating virus, we are confident that God will work good toward all that love him (Rom 8:28), whether in this life or the next.

John Piper reflects on the COVID-19 situation as follows: “The coronavirus is God’s thunderclap call for all of us to repent and realign our lives with the infinite worth of Christ…. it is a bitter season. And God ordained it. God governs it. He will end it. No part of it is outside his sway. Life and death are in his hand”.

Your prayers are appreciated for:

*
The health and wellbeing of the AE evangelistic community as they continue mission and development preparation and action. In particular for Stephen Mbogo as he battles the virus and others who may have been exposed
*
Rachel Lungu and family following Stephen’s passing here on earth.
*
Our strategic planning processes in Africa as we work toward bringing more to Jesus in Africa
*
All our supporters and support offices that we would continue to engage and support the great commission in Africa. For wise and effective use of the resources within our care, and to see the Lord glorified through transformed lives in Africa.
*
For Michael Cassidy as he writes his next book ‘Deep waters of the disciple’ and continues in reasonable health despite the many challenges with cancer and shingles.
