The issue of fairness hangs over a lot of marriages. Trying to dole out the workload evenly is a noble pursuit. But the idea of fairness often leads to more fights. There’s invisible work that’s never counted, of course. Then there’s also the fact that splitting tasks 50-50 is rarely achievable. A different tactic: Instead of striving for fairness, strive for generosity. Because when a marriage is viewed through that lens, everything changes. At least, that’s what a new book argues. And, while hearing the concept will immediately cause some couples to make disapproving fart sounds, it’s worth thinking about.
